DEER VALLEY RESORT TO HOST VISA FREESTYLE INTERNATIONAL

A longtime host to the world’s best freestyle skiing athletes, Deer Valley Resort will once again welcome the Visa Freestyle International, a FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup event, to its slopes February 1–4, 2012. This event marks the tenth World Cup Deer Valley has hosted, in addition to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. This year also marks the tenth anniversary of hosting the 2002 Olympic Winter Games at Deer Valley.

“Hosting these World Cup events never gets old for us,” says Bob Wheaton, resort president and general manager. “We are so honored each year to welcome these amazing athletes to Deer Valley. They are a constant source of inspiration for all of us. We have the best ski runs, course crews, volunteers and staff. We look forward to a great competition this year and encourage all ski enthusiasts to come out and watch the best athletes in the world compete right here on our mountain.”

All competitions will be held at night under the lights at Deer Valley. Park City’s charming historic Main Street will be the location for a live performance by Robert Randolph and The Family Band and fireworks to kick off the event on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, from 7 – 9 p.m. Wednesday evening will also be a celebration of the ten-year anniversary of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games held in Utah. Festivities will include an Olympic torch relay that ends on the concert stage on lower Main Street, appearances by Park City Olympians and 2002 Olympic Winter Games mascots and a costume contest with prizes (participants are encouraged to dig out their old Olympic uniforms, hats, berets, pins and more). Ten-year Olympic Anniversary commemorative pins will be distributed while supplies last. The Kimball Art Center will also be hosting an exhibit of Olympic photographs and memorabilia throughout the month of February.

The moguls competition will take place at Deer Valley Resort on Thursday, February 2, the aerials on Friday, February 3, and the dual moguls on Saturday, February 4. The FIS has announced a new judging format for 2012 World Cups that will make spectating even more exciting. After qualifying rounds in both aerials and moguls, competitors will be broken into two finals; a “Final” for the top 12 or 16 competitors and a “Super Final” for the top four finalists. All competitions will be followed by awards and fireworks at Deer Valley’s outdoor venue. The events hosted by Deer Valley Resort will be televised on NBC on February 11, 2012, at 1 p.m. EST. DEER VALLEY RESORT
Deer Valley will offer a Ski Utah Learn to Ski Program on January 28, 2012. Never-ever skiers and locals only (anyone with a current Utah driver's license). Without a Utah driver's license, a photo ID accompanied by a current Utah property tax form, Utah utility bill or Utah business paycheck stub). Limited to the first 55 registrants.

$39 for the package, per participant ($13 for a lift ticket, $13 for ski rental equipment and $13 for the lesson). Participants must be 13 or older. SNOWBASIN SKI RESORT
Snowbasin Snowsports Learn to Earn Program consists of three steps ending in a Snowbasin season pass for the participant. Step one consists of three, two-hour beginner lessons with lift tickets and rentals included. Upon completion of this step, the individual is enrolled in the recreation program, which is four, two-hour sessions with an all-area lift ticket for each day. Gear to Grow Hosts Outdoor Clothing and Gear Sale

Salt Lake City-based non-profit Gear to Grow is hosting a gear sale on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to celebrate the beginning of the winter season. Sale will be held at their new warehouse on 660 West 7250 South, Midvale. Gently used outdoor apparel and equipment, including jackets, snowboards and boots, will be available for sale at a discounted rate. Proceeds raised from the sale will directly benefit the Gear to Grow program and its operations expenses.

Additionally, area residents are also encouraged to donate any old/surplus gear or apparel to help increase Gear to Grow’s donation inventory. All donations are tax deductable.

The Gear to Grow program brokers gear donations between outdoor retailers and manufacturers and non-profit organizations whose primary missions entail getting people involved in outdoor activities. This allows outdoor retailers and manufacturers to make tax-deductible gear donations for the benefit of getting more people involved in outdoor recreation.

2nd Annual Charity Lift at Canyons on Dec. 10

Kimball Art Center (KAC) and Canyons Resort announced today the hosts, artists, corporations and charities participating in the 2nd Annual Charity Lift. The Charity Lift project unites both artists and corporations to benefit more than 20 charities for this unique annual event. Presented by Canyons, eBay, KSL and Zions Bank, Charity Lift is on Saturday, December 10 in the Grand Summit Ballroom at Canyons from 6:30pm to 10:30pm.

This evening of entertainment will feature a live quick draw art battle, live and silent auction of winter themed art, gear and experiences & a live DJ spinning all evening. Tickets are on sale for $60 and include heavy hors d'oeuvres, beer, wine and refreshment bar and complementary valet parking. The Master of Ceremonies is Mark Eaton with co-hosts, two-time Olympians Shannon Bahrke and Kaylin Richardson.

New this year is the Battle for the Badami where six artists will compete in a quick draw competition creating works for live auction. These artists have ninety minutes to produce a work of art, with party attendees selecting one artist to win an exhibition in the KAC's Badami Gallery. As soon as the time is up, each piece will be auctioned live to the highest bidder and the winner will be announced.

The silent auction portion of the evening will feature 48 items (from 13 artists and 35 corporations) highlighting works of art by local artists and corporations, ski and snowboard gear, packages and winter experiences.

Following the success of last year, KAC began to work with Canyons to create a winter-themed event using reclaimed and repurposed ski and snowboard gear. KAC reached out to the community and began working with local artists and companies, some established, others emerging, but all with a connection in Utah. The challenge was to design a work of art using recycled ski and snowboard gear as the canvas to create a masterpiece to be auctioned off.

This year, more than 20 corporations are participating and have named over 20 charities to benefit. The artists and corporations have teamed up to create innovative, one-of-a-kind works of art to be auctioned off both on eBay.com and live at the Charity Lift event starting on December 3, 2011. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Kimball Art Center, allowing it to continue providing free exhibitions and education programs year-round. The remainder will go to the selected charities and artists.

As a presenting sponsor, eBay will hold an online auction of this art-created by a select group of artists specifically for eBay-starting on December 3, 2011. The seven-day auction will be listed on the eBay Giving Works website and the corporate blog, and it will run through December 10 at 9 p.m. MST. Powderbird Begins Operations on December 15

Wasatch Powderbird Guides begins their 39th season of helicopter skiing in Utah on December 15, 2011 at the Snowbird heliport. Powderbird will also be operating out of Canyons Resort during the 2011-2012 season, giving skiers staying in the Park City area helicopter access to backcountry terrain without adding a drive to Snowbird. Both the Snowbird and Canyons bases have access to the same terrain and guide staff.

The 2011-2012 ski season marks the third consecutive year of heli-skiing operations at Canyons Resort. Although helicopter skiing was offered by Powderbird in the 90s at Canyons when it was known as Park West Resort, the operation never had an official home base like today where guides and clients meet at The Alpine House Restaurant.

Powderbird offers a wide range of products and services from avalanche classes and full day heli-skiing to private chartered helicopters. Powderbird operates under a special use permit from the US Forest Service. This permit allows them a 120 day operating window with access to 80,000 acres of terrain stretching from Bountiful to Provo. Many of the runs are only accessible via helicopter, but terrain is shared with the ski touring community and snowmobilers.

Deer Valley Begins Season with Celebrity Skifest

Deer Valley Resort kicks off its 31st winter season with the excitement of the 20th anniversary of Celebrity SkiFest on December 3 and 4, 2011. The invitational ski event pairs former Olympic ski legends with television and film celebrities for a weekend of skiing, live music and fundraising for the environmental group Waterkeeper Alliance, which supports and empowers Waterkeeper member organizations to protect communities, ecosystems and water quality.

The Deer Valley Celebrity SkiFest will include giant slalom races on both Saturday, December 3rd at noon and a Pro-Am race will take place on Sunday, December 4th at noon as well.

Some of the best-known legends of U. S. skiing are scheduled to compete in this year’s event, including Steve Mahre, Phil Mahre, Tommy Moe and Deer Valley’s own Ambassador of Skiing Heidi Voelker. Celebrities scheduled to attend at this time include: Larry David, Cheryl Hines, Scott Wolf, Patrick Warburton, Oliver Hudson, Bianca Kajlich, Dylan Bruno, Trevor Donovan, Kris Polaha, Hill Harper, JB Smoove, Mark Feuerstein and Joey Pantoliano.

Canyons Opens Friday with a Slew of Upgrades

With lots of fresh snow in the hills and upgraded snowmaking capabilities, Canyons is set to have one of its best November openings ever on Friday, November 25. This season, Canyons is expanding their family adventure offerings with a new winter ziptour and snowshoeing. See all the upgrades below.

Winter ZipTour Adventure
This high-speed adventure is a one-of-a-kind family experience featuring two thrilling zip lines. The advanced zip line is suspended 140-feet above the ground, stretches more than 2,100 feet with a 10 percent grade and flies across the canyon between Lookout Peak and Red Pine Lodge. An intermediate zip line stretches 800 feet with an 8 percent grade and offers a tree-top ride through the Red Pine area.

Trail Improvements and Glade Skiing
On the southern-most part of Canyons, Iron Mountain includes a new detachable quad lift and provides guests with access to an additional 300 acres of northwestern-facing skiing and snowboarding terrain. The area includes 10 runs that range from intermediate to expert to gladed tree skiing. For ski and snowboard experts looking for more adventure, the north-facing runs in the Iron Mountain and Condor Woods areas offers additional terrain for diverse tree skiing. The Timberline chair lift also now allows guests to ride in either direction and provides easy access to the south side of Canyons.

Dining
With the experienced team from the Talisker Restaurant Collection behind all of Canyons’ restaurants, guests this winter can enjoy unique dining additions and menu enhancements. The Umbrella Bar, a lively gastro pub in the Resort Village, will expand with a new seating area that guests can enjoy along with the eatery’s signature gourmet burgers and beers. “Beachfront” Red Tail Grill offers a new family-friendly menu of Southwestern cuisine. In addition to lunch, après ski and dinner, Red Tail Grill serves breakfast daily.

Snowshoeing
This winter Canyons launches its expanded snowshoeing program where local guides introduce guests to the beauty of the Wasatch Mountains. Guests can hike a network of snow-covered trails within the resort and enjoy a gourmet lunch in the warmth of Lookout Cabin.

Kids Winter Activity Zone

Village Programming and Traditions

Expanded Snowmaking
As a complement to Canyons’ almost 400 natural inches of the “Greatest Snow on Earth” and existing snowmaking capabilities, more than $1 million was invested in new snowmaking infrastructure including additional pumping capacity for new snow guns. These improvements allow for increased early coverage of Lookout Ridge and runs served by the Orange Bubble Express chair lift. The DPS Ski Salon is located in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City, just off of I-80 en route to Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons and Park City. The Salon compliments DPS’ retail partners in the Salt Lake Valley—and sits adjacent to DPS’ HQ. At the Salon, skiers can demo all current DPS ski shapes and sizes. In addition, the Salon offers: community events, ski, binding, and accessory sales, tuning, mounting, and espresso.

Stephan Drake, DPS founder stated, “We are looking forward to sharing the DPS line through our ski salon. This store gives locals and visitors an opportunity to experience the DPS culture through community events and through the skis.”

The DPS Ski Salon plans to become a community pillar for the Wasatch skiers by hosting regular events, including photography exhibitions, book signings, slideshows, film screenings, and social gatherings.

Salt Lake City-based non-profit Gear to Grow is hosting a gear sale on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to celebrate the grand opening of its new headquarters and warehouse storefront. The warehouse is located near TRAX at 660 W. 7250 South, Midvale, UT 84047.

Proceeds raised from the sale will directly benefit the Gear to Grow program and its operations expenses. Gently used outdoor apparel and equipment, perfect for the upcoming snow season, including jackets, snowboards and boots, will be available for sale at a discounted rate.

Additionally, area residents are encouraged to donate any old/surplus gear or apparel to help increase Gear to Grow’s donation inventory. All donations are tax deductible.

The Gear to Grow program brokers gear donations between outdoor retailers and manufacturers and non-profit organizations whose primary missions entail getting people involved in outdoor activities. This allows outdoor retailers and manufacturers to make tax-deductible gear donations for the benefit of getting more people involved in outdoor recreation. The Gear to Grow program is a project of the Pacific Mountain Institute, a 501(c) 3 non-profit. Check out the film premiere of The Movement on Thursday, November 3 at the Depot in Salt Lake and Saturday, November 5 at the Egyptian Theatre in Park City. The Movement is a new documentary narrated by Robert Redford and ski film legend, Warren Miller that tells the story of five individuals from all walks of life who faced incredible obstacles, found the inspiration to overcome them and became real everyday heroes. Through skiing, each has ultimately discovered or rediscovered the freedom of movement.

Produced by Kurt Miller, the former head of Warren Miller Films, this film is in sync with the mission of Miller's MakeAHero.org foundation. Funds raised by the film will go directly to local groups working with physically disabled individuals. Producer/Director Kurt Miller and local adaptive athlete Chris Waddell (also featured in the film) will be attending the screening and are available after for questions.

The Utah Avalanche Center is funded partly by local and federal government sources and partly by donations from businesses, foundations, and individual backcountry supporters. Through public support, the Center has been able to operate for the past 17 years due to the exceptional community response by backcountry users and local and national businesses. The UAC issues daily avalanche and mountain weather forecasts helping enthusiasts with life-and-death decisions in the backcountry. They also teach a number of free avalanche awareness courses, house photo and video archives, offer educational modules, accident reports, snow profiles and more.

“Black Diamond’s annual fundraiser is an extremely important initiative for the UAC,” explains Bruce Tremper, Director of the UAC. “All proceeds benefit the non-profit Friends of Utah Avalanche Center, working to keep you on top of the Greatest Snow on Earth since 1980.”

First Outdoor Photography Expo a Success!

Photo District News (PDN) hosted the first annual Outdoor Photography Expo in conjunction with the Outdoor Retailer (OR) show in Salt Lake City, Utah August 4-5, 2011. This expo included an array of established talent from local photographers Adam Barker and Chris Noble to world renowned legendary photographers Art Wolfe and Franz Lanting.

The show ran deep with industry knowledge and loads of creative business genius from more than 20 presenting professions, formatted so participants could choose one of four specialized two-hour seminars each morning and afternoon.

Participants had many great options to choose from in the following seminar categories: Shooting + Lighting, Tips + Trends, Business + Marketing, Techniques + Video. Specialized sub-categories included: Strategies for the emerging outdoor and adventure photographer, Workflow secrets for achieving the most realistic HDR results for creative and commercial work, How to produce gorgeous landscape prints, How to use strobes in the outdoors, Documentary video creation, Marketing and publicity for the outdoor photographer and more. These seminars were stocked with valuable information for the any photographer, from beginner to the established professional.

In between seminars participants attended the open booth trade show featuring a number of popular manufactures of photographic equipment and suppliers to the industry including: Nikon, Canon, Manfrotto, Gitzo, Benro, Spyder, Leica, Smug Mug, Topaz, Lowepro, and more.

On Friday an art fair cocktail party was held for all participants who desired to showcase their finest collection of work to others. The first annual Outdoor Photography Expo was wrapped up with Art Wolfe and Franz Lanting sharing their keynote presentation to a packed grand ballroom.

Crankworx Colorado in Winter Park

I spent last weekend in Winter Park, Colorado at Crankworx, one of the largest gravity-fueled mountain bike festivals in the United States. The event consisted of four days of intense competition in Dual Slalom, Cross Country, Slopestyle and the hilarious Intergalactic Pond Crossing.

I was lucky enough to watch the Slopestyle finals live, and was impressed by the talent these athletes showed throughout the competition. But bragging rights wasn't the only reason to show up to Crankworx, $35,000 in prizes were up for grabs too.

At the end of the day, Brandon Semenuk was crowned the winner with a score of 95.67 with Yannick Granieri in second with an 88.67 and Martin Soderstrom coming in third with an 85.33.

Following Slopestyle Finals I watched the Intergalactic Pond Crossing Competition, which consists of riding your bike across a narrow track that is floating on the village pond. The person to make it across the fastest without falling in wins! A guy in a gorilla suit, kids and porfessional athletes attempted this challenge, and a lucky few made it across without getting soaked.

Black Diamond Equipment is hosting the 2nd Annual Salt Lake Climbers Alliance Fundraiser on Thursday night, June 23. The event will take place in front of BD’s SLC headquarters, in the parking lot at 2084 East & 3900 South.

The Salt Lake Climbers’ Alliance is a 501c(3) non-profit organization. Created to promote climbing opportunities, the SLCA preserves local climbing access and encourages stewardship of the environment.

The event runs from 6-10 p.m. and will include food, drinks, raffles and music with everything benefiting SLCA. Local Winners at the Dew Tour Toyota Championships!

Congratulations are in order for Park City natives Alex Schlopy and Josh Christensen, who won 1st and 2nd places, respectively, in the men's freeski slopestyle final. Another Park City resident, McRae Williams, made it to the finals and came in 8th place overall.

After dominating on the slopes all season, 19-year-old Bobby Brown of Breckenridge, Colo. concluded the Toyota Championship as the overall men’s freeski slopestyle Dew Cup champion. Brown narrowly missed the podium in today’s final with a fourth place finish, but earned enough points to push him to the top of the freeski slopestyle rankings and take home the coveted Cup. With his hometown cheering him on, Park City, Utah native Alex Schlopy, 18, won his first Winter Dew Tour final in men’s freeski slopestyle. On the women’s front, Canadian Kay Turski, 22, landed on top of the podium with a winning score of 89.50.

“I’m super stoked about winning the Dew Cup,” said Brown. “It’s great to be out here in the sunny weather here in Snowbasin and to end up winning. I’m pumped.”

The men’s freeski slopestyle final concluded with local Utah athletes in the number one and two podium positions. Schlopy wowed the crowd with a technical run that included a front 3 swap, blind 3 swap, blind 2 out, blind 630 out of the canyon, lefside 900 to switch 1440 for a top score of 94.50. After winning the Last Chance Qualifier and placing first in the prelims, Utah’s Joss Christensen, age 19, finished in second with a score of 92.00. Australia’s Russ Henshaw earned the third podium position with a score of 87.50.

“It’s crazy to have won. I’ve been looking at those Dew Tour trophies for a long time, and I finally got one so I’m stoked,” said Schlopy. “It’s a beautiful day out here, and we’re having fun. It’s Utah, my hometown state so it’s good.”

Shaun White Wins Skate Vert Final at SLC Dew Tour

This weekend's Dew Tour Toyota Challenge ended with a celebration on Sunday when Olympic champion Shaun White achieved his second consecutive victory in the skate vert finals. Outdoor Sports Guide attended the event and enjoyed White's impressive runs, including his signature Armadillo (a frontside heel-flip body varial 540).

Canada’s Pierre-Luc Gagnon, 30, placed second with a 90.50 and Bucky Lasek, 37, of Baltimore, Maryland rounded out the podium in third with an 88.25. This victory puts White in fifth overall with just the finals in Las Vegas left to go.

This Saturday morning, August 28, set your alarm clock a little earlier and show up to Highland High School to participate in a 5K benefiting Sarah Hays, a young Salt Lake City woman diagnosed with Stage-4 cancer.

Sarah was recently diagnosed with a rare form of Stage-4 cancer with an unknown primary origin, due to the extensive spreading of tumors throughout her body. Product of the Week: Olympic Granola Bars

I tried these delicious granola bars at the Outdoor Retailer Open Air Demo a few weeks ago and was incredibly impressed! The bar was included in our gift bags from running a 5K that morning, and because of the lack of vegetarian-friendly lunch items at the demo I devoured it as a lunch replacement.

The Espresso Almond Chocolate bar is made of all-natural rolled oats, tasty chocolate and a hint of coffee flavor for a yummy combination. It also comes in a few other Coffee House flavors: Mocha Mint, Turtle Mocha and Green Tea Zest. Not a coffee fan? The bar also comes in Trail Bar varieties: Almond Chocolate, Honey Almond and Chocolate Peanut. We also tried the Honey Almond and loved its sweet flavor.

These bars contain only natural ingredients, are free of wheat and dairy and contain no trans fats. I recommend eating one after a long workout or as a full meal replacement.

Bag Monster Invades Salt Lake!

A few years ago an artist named Andy Keller began wearing a costume made of 500-700 plastic bags, the average number an American uses in one year. This summer he's decided to wear the Bag Monster costume on a tour around the nation to educate people about the damage done by single-use bags. During the tour he will surround himself with a sea of 45,000 previously used bags, the total an average American uses in their lifetime.

The Bag Monster will be stopping in Salt Lake City at the Library Plaza from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, August 19. Andy will be available for questions throughout the exhibit.

Camping and clean hair are two things that usually don't go together. After a few days in the woods, your hair looks greasy and smells like a campfire. People cover up hair with hats or pull it back into a ponytail. But there's actually a way to keep your hair looking clean a lot longer without washing it...dry shampoo!

You spray dry shampoo on your hair and it sucks up excess oil in your hair so you can easily brush it out. I know what you're thinking, dry shampoo has been around forever and it just makes your hair all white and powdery. But I tried Salon Grafix Invisible Dry Spray Shampoo on my last camping trip and it actually made my hair look clean. Not old-lady white. I loved it! Plus, it neutralizes odors so my hair looked AND smelled like it had been washed. (This product also works great at home when you're running late and don't have time to wash your hair.)

The University of Utah Outdoor Recreation program hosted the 34th annual Banff Mountain Film Festival at Kingsbury Hall Feb. 22-24, which was expanded this year to include a third night of films.
